New MFA

This is cool, and kind of ties into our discussion about class and MFAs and all that junk. Tina Howe has started an MFA playwriting program at Hunter. It's a CUNY school, so it only costs 8k, plus all classes start at or after 5:30 pm so you can still work full-time.

This is seemingly a step in the right direction.

This is fantastic.

I was going to apply, but found out I would have to take the GRE. Oof. Can't take the GRE. Dealbreaker.

Patrick, ha! That's amazing. I think, from what I've gleaned from other programs, that the GRE is not of much importance. Just a formality, mostly.

From their website:

"CUNY also requires inclusion of GRE scores, but have no fear, we're interested in your talent as a playwright."

Lies.

Since you’ll be studying in the heart of New York City, you’ll not only be exposed to a wide variety of theater and other forms of the performing arts, you’ll also get to work with talented actors, directors and designers on your own plays.

This really stood out for me, since it focuses on MAKING plays more than just writing and talking about them.

Queens College also has an MFA Playwriting program. My wife did an MFA in Fiction Writing there. It's new (maybe 2007 or so) and there aren't any real wellknown people on the playwriting faculty (like at Brooklyn and Hunter) but it's affordable and made for people who have dayjobs.

It's great that the CUNY playwriting MFA will only cost $8K. As a playwright brandishing a shiny new MFA from Hunter, you should be able to make that $8K back in playwriting income in about...oh, 20 or 30 years.

You're right, Ken. No one should ever get an MFA or do anything creative with their lives, or dream at all. Let's all focus ONLY ON MONEY because NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. And with your bitterness and probably having a job you loathe, and not pursuing your life's passion, you will lose WAAAAYYYYY MORE THAN $8k, both literally and figuratively. All we have is our dreams and you've obviously killed yours and you're throwing peanuts like a child.
