Wasserstein Prize "Do-over"

Check out the New York Times' Arts Beat blog post about TDF's decision to reconsider the nominees for the Wasserstein prize. Big props to Mike Lew for his fantastic letter, and to the petition signers!

Amazing. Good on TDF for reconsidering, and good on Mike Lew for grabbing the flag and running up that hill.

Except that the do-over includes new submissions, and the original nominees will need to submit more work. Okay, it's good that the judges see a problem they must address. But the approach seems to me to add insult to injury. Why don't they just go back to the original list and award the prize?

Again, this makes theater look like some precious privately owned mansion where everything is out of reach of the public. This is how you put theater out of business, by making it so special and snooty that people who read about it will be confirmed in their suspicion: theater has nothing to do with them.

Sounds pretty accurate to me.
